I might not be the best saxophone player in the World - But I'm one of them..... That is to say - I'm one of the sax players in the World!
I started saxophone when I was eleven years old. I was inspired by the sax player from Madness as he flew through the air. I told my Dad I'd like to play a saxophone, and he rashly took me to a music store in Manchester where I watched him shell out £210 pounds. This was an awful lot of money in 1982. At the end of paying the shop assistant my father turned around to me a said "This is the second most expensive thing I've ever bought - The first being our house." At that moment I knew I could never give it up.
My first flirtations with the saxophone were not altogether magnificent. The band leader of my first high school band once approached the head of music about my appalling playing. He told her not to worry, as, he didn't think I was too bright, and would quickly give up. Spin forward nearly thiry years, and I think sometimes my current band leader thinks the same thing.
Luckily for everyone, I have done a lot of practise since those days, and lots of water has passed under the bridge. Playing the saxophone has taken me all over Europe, to North and South America, and most of the concert halls in the UK - I've even been on a song that was No 1 in the US charts, which went on to win a Grammy. I am very proud to work on a regular basis with the top class musicians of the Glenn Miller Orchestra and I am especially proud to play with such a fine saxophone section.
